Have you been wondering about the medium of Encaustic?
Encaustic Painting is a medium that is 4000 years old. It is true alchemy. Bees Wax mixed with Damar Resin+ Pigments, heated to 200 degrees, making it liquid. Many layers of heated encaustic medium and pigments are applied with a natural bristle brush, it is then fused with a heat gun, painting layer upon layer until the piece is finished. All of my work is done on Cradled Birch Board as Encaustic needs a firm, non-bendable substrate or the wax will crack. Some pieces are carved right into the wax creating Encaustic Etchings.

Nature is my Muse and molten Bees Wax is one of my favorite mediums.
I became interested in Encaustic painting in 2008. I studied for several years and started Encaustic Painting in 2010. I am in love with this very warm, medium that smells like honey. It is always a joy to be in my Encaustic Studio.
Over the years I have discovered many things about painting with hot wax. Layers and layers of Encaustic medium and pigments, fused one on top of the next to create a depth that I have not found in other mediums. I like the mysterious look of graphite particles suspended in clear medium layered over a creamy or stark white background. I have also played and worked with the melding of two mediums, embedding photographs or doing photo transfers with my images. The effect is stunning and always a bit of a surprise, depending on the image.

I have also created very large pieces, 4ftx2ft, which is 8 sq. ft. of wax.Etching into the somewhat cooled wax is something I really love. I use a fine needle like tool to scratch onto the surface of the wax. Sometimes I then add Oil Pastel into the crevices and also onto the surface to create the tight scenes of birds, bees, trees and other inspirations from the natural world.

I have been studying, creating and showing my Encaustic Artwork for almost a decade here in Maine. kdb - Maine Encaustic Artist.

kdb.Wilderland.Maine...

I have been working on an online project, Wilderland.Maine.
This site is an online portfolio of my Maine inspired work, which features kdb Photographs, Acrylic and Encaustic Paintings.
I walk, explore and document the long fingers of land that reach down into the Casco Bay almost everyday in all weather. Deep snow and sunny bright warm days they are all inspiring. Maine is truly lovely in all seasons. My favorite area to document are the reaches that form the banks of the Kennebec River, in the area where this mighty river meets the sea.
This is a unique and spectacular region.

Color Block Series, Winter/ Spring

Icy Contrails and the Icy Marsh  36x48

 Snowy Big Marsh  48x24

Springtime Marsh   24x48
Maine is in a deep freeze at the moment. I have been spending alot of time walking and photographing the icy marshes. So cold but so amazingly beautiful. The colors in snow are infinite, this is the time of year when all I see is various shades of blue shadows reaching out across the land. Simply wonderful.
This Color Block series is a four season Sky, Marsh and Ocean, love note to nature. If you are interested in purchasing a Color Block painting, please send an email.

Color Blocking: The Marshes...

Color Blocking. Skies, Marsh/ Estuary. The dreamy almost undefined horizon and reflected colors are the magic of this series. The seasons, the light, the grasses and the tides are magical. I find that I always have something different to capture, every moment of every day. I am in love with this watery place and all of the Birdies who live there.

New Studio/ New Track of Work...

Estuary/ Ocean / Islands and Sky, Acrylic on Canvas 3x6
Wow. These past 4 months have been filled with moving, setting up a new Studio and just moving forward on many levels. Yay!
My new series is inspired by some of my favorite Contemporary Artists. Rothko, Diebenkorn, Hopper & Mondrian to name a few. Their unique sense of color and how they view the world interests me tremendously.
I have been working on this series for the past year and thinking about it in broader strokes for several years. It was so exciting to paint two in the series.
I am calling this track of work "Color Blocking".
A Contemporary look at the Natural world. The Sea and Estuaries, so far. Mountains and Birches are on my radar moving forward.
A life change can be some powerful mojo!

Encaustic " Edge of the Sea" Collection...

The Edge of the Sea...
This is part of a series I am dropping off at The Yarmouth Frame Gallery.
These were really fun and dreamy to create. I am using Antique Frames from the 1880's,
the effect is a bit surreal with the subject matter and medium!
This Exhibit opens on Saturday, August 3rd, 4-7 and hangs through the end of September.

Encaustic Sea Shells...

Summertime in Maine. Walking at the edge of the Sea is my favorite thing to do. I love to study the tumbled shells on the shore. So lovely and such a variation of colors and shapes.Today I am posting a collection of different Encautsic Sea Shells I have created. Some of these shells are available, others are sold but could easily be commissioned, in the size and background color you may be looking for.

A Cornfield, some Fireflies and a Starry Sky...

March has been a very busy month. I have curated 3 Exhibits. The Salt Exchange "Farm To Table", Tao Restaurant, Maine Nature " Birds, Sky & Water" and later in the month at The Chocolate Church Art Gallery "Fiddleheads and Springtime Pleasures.
For the "Farm to Table" Exhibit I created a Series, "In and around the Cornfields".

A Cornfield as the Crow Flies 40x30 Acrylic on Canvas

I was inspired by the thought of  a Crow, who would be swooping towards a Cornfield then up towards a fair weather sky, I was interested in the point of view that would translate onto a canvas.
Corn in a Twilight Sky  24x18 Acrylic on Canvas

CornStalk  18x24 Acrylic on Canvas

Cornstalks have many colors in the leaves and the stalks. It was fun to paint them with a Twilight Sky and on a Sunny day.

Fireflies on a Starry Night  48x24  Acrylic, Rice paper mounted on Birchboard

Fireflies are the magic of a warm summer evening. I loved the thought of these blinking beauties on a Star filled Night. Looking up over the tops of the Cornfield and up into the heavens. Life is a wonder.

Encaustic Etched Birds...

"Blue Jay" Encaustic, Etched + Oil Pigments 10x10
I recently completed these two Encaustic pieces.
The Blue Jay is a fun one, I was imagining him on his perch high above the forest floor, sqwaking.
The Jay is part of the larger family of birds called Corvids. Not surprisingly, this family includes Crows and Ravens. Explains the noisy nature of the Jay!

"Red Crossbill" Encautsic, Etched + Oil Pigments 10x10

The Red Crossbill is perched in the pines. The winter sky tells the story of a cold day. This birdy has its feathers ruffled out a bit to keep warm.
